[ there are only so many card games you can play with only two people... they're probably going to do go fish or something simple. After all, they don't have much experience that wasn't gleaned from watching others play far away. ]
[ it's slightly amusing to imagine Shess doing something apparently rebellious - but considering his people seem warlike, it must have been. ]
... With so many people living in your world, I imagine you'll never get everyone's approval. [ their understanding of society is... slightly skewed. ] I'm surprised it's safer there than with the humans... then again, I've seen how violent humans are.
Well, it's just the approval of the nastika—the first generation of my race, and of my clan in particular. Or rather, my mother's... if she had said to kill Leny, that would've been the end of it.
[luckily that didn't happen!]
It's very dangerous in the sura realm for someone with human blood. But... anyone with sura blood was in danger in the human realm for a time, and at least if she came with me to the sura realm, I could protect her.
[ half-blood, first generation -- they don't understand these terms all that well, but they can piece together the general meaning from context. So this child was a mixture between human and sura...? They didn't know things like that were possible.
It does sound very Shess-like, though, to protect someone who otherwise has no one. ]
She's lucky you found her. Even one person is enough.
Well, things are better now for Halfs in the human realm, so I brought her back. She's much happier among humans than among the sura, so I imagine there'll come a day when she no longer needs me.
Looking after her does make me happy... but in the end, it's not as if I can remain in the human realm forever, either. It'd be nice if I could at least stay until the end of her lifespan, but I don't know if I can.
Well, that's not entirely inaccurate, though it's more complicated than that... but no.
The main reason is that in the end, I have a duty to my clan. I only returned to the human realm to bring her back there and because I have work there for the moment. Once it ends, I'll be finding a way to return home.
[ It's sad. Sad, but they understand. They, too, are bound by their duties, after all. That's just how life is. Only the careless and selfish throw that away to pursue what they want. Like Phos. ]

[ a quiet admittance. of course, they're still nervous, but... not as much as they would be with someone else, they think. They deal him some cards. ]

Do you think so? Thank you. Gentleness isn't really a valued trait for suras, though...

[ their eyes stay on the cards as they deal them out while speaking. ]
You even take care of young. That's what you said, before.
DAMN IT SIB
Well, just the one. It's not a pattern for me yet.
;)
[ they at least know young gems are a handful, and they've seen how vulnerable larval insects and the like are. ]
But that's in your nature, too, isn't it? Wanting to take care of others.
;_;
... In my nature, is it... I suppose. Perhaps it's a byproduct of getting old.

... Did you make Leny?
no subject
No. Her parents were killed and I took her with me to the sura realm, since the humans would've killed her at the time for being a half-blood.

It really is in your nature.

[ they comment as they fork a card over to Shess. As they thought, they're not actually that good at this. ]
Are you only with her because she needs you? Or do you need her, too?

... That sounds lonely.
